The Caravan idea…

November 17th, 2008  |  Published in The Caravan

The purpose of the Zero Carbon Caravan is to inspire, to demonstrate by practical action that one of the most difficult things to do without emitting carbon, travelling, can be achieved, and can be fun. And we will be demonstrating other aspects of zero carbon living too, as we travel, holding meetings in the places we visit to both explain the need for zero carbon, and to discuss with the audience how to do it.  So we will look at renewable energy systems, and ways of saving energy, methods of transport, how much carbon our food uses up in its production, and other things concerned with lifestyle too.

We will also be holding zero carbon concerts, which will use a minimal amount of renewably generated electricity, and lots of audience participation.  This will encourage people to act together, something which is vital if we are to defeat climate change.  In the words of the song ‘Ship in Distress’ by Seize the Day “or can we mend our ways forever, before those reckoning times arrive? If we act now, and act together, our children’s children may yet survive”.

We will visit inspiring places on the way, such as the Centre for Alternative Technology, and Transition Town Totnes, and collect information as we go, so that we can say to the negotiators at the talks in Copenhagen “We want a zero carbon world, as fast as we can – and here’s how to do it”.

Leave a Response

The Zero Carbon Caravan (ZCC) will generate a mass movement of individuals and organisations to carry the message of action on climate change to the UNFCCC talks in Copenhagen (2009).

We are making our way to Copenhagen without using fossil fuel transportation. Along the route we'll connect with local groups to establish an itinerary of ‘zero carbon conferences’ to build momentum for zero carbon awareness.

The ZCC will act as a coordinating hub for other ‘caravanning’ groups, encouraging worldwide participation to demand of the UNFCCC our mission: ‘A zero carbon world, as fast as we can’.
